Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Banditry, characterized by armed criminal groups engaging in theft, extortion, and violence, has emerged as a significant threat to rural economies in Nigeria. Shiroro Local Government Area in Niger State has experienced increasing levels of banditry, severely affecting agricultural productivity. Agriculture is the primary livelihood for many people in Shiroro, and the disruption caused by banditry has had devastating effects on both the security and economic well-being of farmers. The attacks on farms, the theft of livestock, and the displacement of farmers have all contributed to reduced agricultural output, which has exacerbated food insecurity in the region.

The impact of banditry on agriculture goes beyond the immediate loss of crops and livestock. The fear of bandit attacks has forced farmers to abandon their fields, leading to a decline in the cultivation of essential crops and a reduction in the availability of farm produce in local markets. Additionally, farmers who are able to continue working face challenges in accessing credit and agricultural inputs due to insecurity (Sani & Aliyu, 2024). This study seeks to explore the extent to which banditry has affected agricultural productivity in Shiroro and identify strategies to mitigate these impacts.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rising wave of banditry in Shiroro has severely undermined agricultural productivity, which is the mainstay of the local economy. The continuous attacks on farming communities and the general insecurity in the region have led to a decline in food production, loss of income for farmers, and increased poverty levels. This study addresses the need to examine how banditry affects agricultural output and explore the underlying factors contributing to the decline in productivity.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of banditry on agricultural productivity in Shiroro LGA.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by farmers in Shiroro due to banditry.

  3. To propose strategies for improving agricultural productivity and ensuring food security in the face of banditry.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How has banditry affected agricultural productivity in Shiroro?

  2. What are the key challenges faced by farmers due to banditry?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve agricultural productivity in Shiroro amidst banditry?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Banditry has significantly reduced agricultural productivity in Shiroro LGA.

  2. Farmers in Shiroro face numerous challenges due to the insecurity caused by banditry.

  3. Implementing strategies such as improved security measures and support for farmers can increase agricultural productivity in Shiroro.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant because it offers an in-depth analysis of how banditry impacts agricultural productivity in Shiroro, one of the most affected regions in Nigeria. By examining the challenges faced by farmers and identifying potential solutions, the study will provide valuable recommendations for policymakers, local authorities, and development organizations working to enhance agricultural output in insecure regions. The findings will contribute to broader discussions on improving food security and rural development in conflict-prone areas.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on Shiroro LGA in Niger State and will examine the effects of banditry on agricultural productivity, with a particular focus on key crops and livestock. The scope is limited to the experiences of farmers in the region, and the study will not cover other areas affected by banditry. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing data from affected areas due to security concerns.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Banditry: Armed criminal activities involving theft, extortion, and violence, often perpetrated by groups operating outside of government control.

  • Agricultural Productivity: The output of agricultural products, including crops and livestock, produced per unit of input, such as land, labor, and capital.

  • Food Insecurity: The state of being without reliable access to sufficient quantities of affordable, nutritious food.
